Organismo is an independent study program of art in applied critical ecologies promoted by TBA21–Academy and National Museum Thyssen-Bornemisza. The program aims to connect research and artistic processes with practical cases of ecological transformations led by public and private institutions across Spain. The cases of the first edition of the program were:
- United Nations Ocean Conference in Barcelona, Catalunya (facilitated by TBA21).
- Suq Centeno in Córdoba, Andalucía (facilitated by the collective Plata and Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation).
- Abadía Retuerta Territory in Sardón del Duero, Castille and Leon (facilitated by Abadía Retuerta).
- ARQVA National Museum of Underwater Archaeology in Cartagena, Murcia (facilitated by the Spanish Ministry of Culture).
- Immersive Narratives (facilitated by TBA21).
The program is based on the hypothesis that the work of artists leading interdisciplinary projects has great potential to contribute to a cultural paradigm shift that leads to new ways of inhabiting the planet that embrace complexity and are inclusive. Over the course of several months, program participants reflected on the case to which they chose to contribute, and brought an artistic lens to processes with which the sponsoring institutions of each case were grappling. Participants worked in interdisciplinary groups to explore a wide range of topics, including water, soil, forests, agriculture, archaeology, history, geography and anthropology, using diverse artistic perspectives and methodologies.
The first edition of Organismo was launched in 2024 and ran from January to July. This “year zero” was conceived as a prototyping process during which the program tested hypotheses and organizational structures.
