This study, developed in partnership with IABS (Instituto Brasileiro de Desenvolvimento e Sustentabilidade), analyses and systematises global legislation and business initiatives related to the circular economy. The aim is to establish a baseline that will encourage its implementation in the industrial sector.

The linear economy, which dominates today’s world, is characterised by the model of extract, produce and discard, based on the assumption that resources are infinite. In contrast, the circular economy, a concept with diverse definitions and origins, is based on a regenerative model. In other words, it seeks economically and environmentally sustainable alternatives for managing the use of natural resources, production and waste.

This study integrates the concepts of circular economy and circular socio-economy. The latter, by adding the social dimension, emphasises the importance of transitions being inclusive, tailored to people’s specific realities and involving participatory and collaborative practices.

Specifically, the work analyses and systematises the existing circular economy legislation worldwide, as well as the innovations that companies are applying to this framework in their business models. The objective is to establish a baseline and proposals for public-private partnerships that could be developed globally, and particularly in Brazil, to restructure production chains and achieve greater positive social, economic and environmental impact.

The study also aims to contribute to the design of public policies that promote socio-circular production processes in the context of transitions towards sustainability. This approach is in line with the aim of Atelier itd and IABS to promote recommendations that foster innovation in participatory social processes during transitions, in order to consolidate more inclusive, ethical and sustainable economic proposals.
