On the 18-20th November, 2024, Philea brought together two of its networks in Madrid for three days: the Thematic Network on Disability and the Funders Forum on Sustainable Cities. This gathering, which brought together 20 philanthropic organizations from Europe and the U.S., aimed to foster mutual learning, strengthen collaboration, and expand the systemic impact of philanthropy.
This initiative sought to address several challenges: the fragmentation between philanthropic sectors dedicated to disability and inclusion and those focused on sustainable urban development; the lack of synergies and collaboration opportunities among funders with complementary objectives; the need for more integrated approaches to achieve systemic impact in philanthropy; and challenges related to accessibility and inclusion in urban environments, along with the urgency of climate adaptation and sustainability.
The meeting included field visits to prominent initiatives in urban development and inclusion. Participants visited Entrepatios, Madrid’s first ecological cohousing project; CEIP Navas de Tolosa, a public school with an innovative approach to climate adaptation and environmental education; and Torre ILUNION, an office building designed to be accessible and inclusive for people of all abilities.
