Given the climate emergency we are facing and the urgent need to build more desirable future scenarios, schools are becoming strategic hubs for catalysing just transitions towards climate neutrality and sustainability. These institutions function as the learning ground for present and future decision-makers, as well as communities capable of driving profound social change.
Schools educate and inspire. They are places of encounter and transformation, where the seeds of change are sown. When a school is transformed, its community and neighbourhood are transformed with it. Yet despite its immense potential, education for sustainability and climate action is not yet sufficiently integrated into curricula and teacher training.
In this context, Clim-Action was born, a project whose main objective is to create an educational partnership for climate action in the city of Madrid. This project also aims to:
- Identify, systematise, connect and amplify the reach of educational programmes focused on climate action.
- Design and implement pilot processes that integrate these programmes into the curriculum, consolidating them as a whole-school project, and aligning them with the city’s climate agenda.

PROJECT INITIATIVES
Repository of Climate Education Initiatives
The Repository of Climate Education Initiatives is a tool developed to compile and systematise educational programmes and resources on sustainability and climate action offered to schools by different organisations. Initially focused on the city of Madrid, it facilitates the search and selection of initiatives, while promoting connections between institutions and increasing the reach of their programmes.
This repository is a living tool that is constantly updated. If you know of a programme that should be included, we invite you to fill in this form.
Based on the repository results up to 2024, an article was developed analysing those educational programmes and resources for sustainability and climate action in the city of Madrid. This analysis assesses their main characteristics, their alignment with the current educational framework, and proposes improvements for their enhancement.
Educational Alliance
One of the main objectives of the project is to build a partnership between educational actors promoting joint work to advance education for climate action and strengthen their initiatives.
Following the publication of the Repository of Climate Education Initiatives, the project invited various organisations to jointly assess the state of the art of these initiatives in the city of Madrid. During this analysis, the organisations identified a number of common challenges and opportunities that need to be addressed in order to consolidate transformative education in the face of the climate crisis.
As part of this partnership, regular meetings are held where the organisations:
- Share experiences and lessons learned.
- Analyse good practices and opportunities for improvement.
- Design a strategic roadmap for integrating climate education in schools.
Pilots in schools
Since 2023, Clim-Action has been developing two pilot projects in neighbourhoods with higher vulnerability indices in the city of Madrid. The aim of these pilot projects is to strengthen education for climate action as a whole-school approach, in line with the city’s climate agenda, by connecting it to existing programmes and resources.
Clim-Action accompanies schools in each phase of the process:
- Diagnosis: Identification of the current situation and priorities of the centre.
- Planning: Definition of an action plan adapted to the needs and desires of each educational community.
- Implementation and evaluation: Follow-up of the selected initiatives and evaluation of their impact.
- Systematisation: Documentation of learning.

PARTICIPATING SCHOOL CENTRES AND THEIR PILOT PROJECTS
The school of Ponce de León, located in the Usera district of Madrid, which is affiliated with the Montemadrid Foundation and is bilingual in oral and sign language, is consolidating its commitment to climate action through a pilot project focusing on teacher training and curriculum revision.
Teachers at all levels of education, from kindergarten to vocational training and special education, are taking part in a training programme designed to integrate education for sustainability and climate action into the annual curriculum and learning situations. The training is provided by FUHEM.

The public school of Ramón María del Valle Inclán, located in the San Blas district of Madrid, has chosen to pilot a participatory process engaging its educational community. The aim is to establish a commitment to integrating climate action both in the classroom and within the school environment, strengthening ties with the neighbourhood.
Through workshops inspired by the Ecotopías methodology, students had the opportunity to share their dreams and aspirations for transforming their school into a more sustainable space. Workshops were also held with teachers and local stakeholders.
As a result, the event ClimaX: Valle Inclán, Heart of San Blas was organised—a day designed and led by students, featuring the participation of various local stakeholders, to reimagine and build a more collaborative and sustainable San Blas, thus reinforcing the bond between the school and its community.
Both the workshops and the #ClimaX event were led by Zuloark and Antonella Broglia.
